As August comes to a close, September brings with it a familiar sense of transition. Summer vacations are winding down, students are back in school, and many of us are settling back into routines after a busy season. Before we fully turn the page, I hope everyone has the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing Labor Day weekend with family and friends. Whether your plans include a backyard cookout, time on the lake, or simply a chance to recharge, I wish you a safe and enjoyable holiday.
For those of us in Revenue Cycle, September also signals the start of an important season of preparation. Across the industry, teams are getting ready for the annual ICD-10 updates that take effect on October 1. While these changes are part of our normal rhythm each year, they also serve as a reminder of the expertise, collaboration, and continuous learning that drive our profession. Thank you to everyone who invests in the time to prepare, educate, and ensure a smooth transition for the organizations and patients we serve.
One of the things I appreciate most about our Revenue Cycle community is the partnership we share. Where are you from? I am from Milan, Indiana and now reside in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
Who makes up your family (spouse, partner, children, pets, etc.)? My family home consists of my significant other, his 2 girls (24 and 18), my son (16), and our 5th child 😊a Goldendoodle named Kobe. I also have a 24-year-old daughter that lives with her fiancé and is getting married in September 2027.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? In my free time, I enjoy spending time working in our landscape around our house, spending time with family, and playing pickleball.
Share something interesting, unique, or surprising about yourself. A fun fact about me is that I enjoy shooting my bow and used to deer hunt!
What is your current role, and what do you enjoy most about it? I have been with e4health for almost 2 months. I enjoy the people that I work with and my job itself, everyone has been very welcoming and helpful. I have also enjoyed having the opportunity to train new coders on our sites system and what they expect out of their coders.
What attracted you to this field? I started my healthcare journey after graduating from Cincinnati State College in 2011. I was then offered a position at our local hospital that I had interned at and received my RHIT credentials a few months later. I got interested in coding through my sister, which has a RHIA and codes inpatient encounters.
What roles or experiences led you to where you are today? From the start of my coding career I was coding ancillary accounts, from there I started coding ED, OBS, SDS, and clinics. As of today, I’m still coding ED, but thinking about looking into classes to further my coding skills and possibly learn inpatient or get a refresher in SDS.

As students head back to the classroom, it's a great reminder that learning doesn't stop after graduation. Consider adopting a "back-to-school" mindset by setting a new professional goal, learning a new skill, or exploring a topic that interests you.
Growth doesn't have to be formal training. It can be as simple as asking a colleague about their area of expertise, reading an industry article, or dedicating a few minutes each week to developing a new skill.
Just as students succeed with the support of teachers and classmates, we can all benefit from sharing knowledge, asking questions, and learning from one another. Small investments in learning today can lead to big opportunities tomorrow.

🤖 AI, Prior Authorization & the Push for Physician Oversight
Brief summary: As AI becomes more involved in prior authorization, new federal legislation aims to ensure technology does not become the final decision maker when care is denied. The AMA-backed proposal would require physician review of AI-assisted Medicare Advantage denials and establish additional oversight around how health plans use automated decision-making. An important development as payers increasingly incorporate AI into utilization management and authorization workflows.

📉 CMS Proposal Could Dramatically Cut Remote Patient Monitoring Reimbursement
Brief summary: A provision in the proposed CY 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule could significantly reduce reimbursement associated with remote patient monitoring devices. While much of the attention surrounding the proposed rule has focused elsewhere, the potential payment reductions could have major implications for practices using RPM and other connected-care models. Another important reimbursement change for physician practices to have on their radar.

💰 Medicare Advantage Copay Changes Are Creating New Revenue Cycle Challenges
Brief summary: Changes in how Medicare Advantage cost sharing is being interpreted are making it increasingly difficult for physician practices to collect copays at the point of service. Practices may instead have to wait for claims adjudication before determining patient responsibility, creating additional administrative work, delayed collections, and greater bad-debt risk. The issue highlights another growing area of payer complexity affecting physician practice revenue cycle operations.
