Cystic Fibrosis
This month, Start Smart will focus on another pediatric diagnosis, Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Cystic fibrosis is a genetic multisystem condition that primarily affects the respiratory and digestive systems. Accurate documentation should clearly identify the type of CF and any associated manifestations or acute complications. As coders and auditors, we need to carefully review the provider’s documentation for terms such as pulmonary exacerbation, bronchiectasis, pancreatic insufficiency, chronic sinus disease, and colonization or infection with an identified organism, while carefully following ICD-10-CM instructional notes.
