LAP Flap (Lumbar Artery Perforator Flap)
New Codes (Valid for October 1, 2024 discharges)
The LAP flap is a type of autologous breast reconstruction that uses skin and tissue from the lower back and love handle to make a breast. This detached tissue is used to make a breast and small arteries and veins are sutured under a microscope to allow the tissue to survive in this new area. Because the blood vessels to the LAP flap are quite short, an artery/vein graft is taken from the abdominal wall, which results in a small 5cm scar in the underwear line. The LAP flap is a great option for women who are not candidates for traditional microsurgical reconstruction from the abdomen (DIEP flap) due to prior surgeries or minimal fat in this region.
