Learning About Larynx Transplant

Defining Larynx Transplant

Larynx Transplant is an emerging procedure for patients with laryngeal dysfunction or laryngectomy. The procedure replaces a damaged (or excised) voice box (larynx) with a new one, potentially restoring voice, swallowing, and breathing functions.
It can include the larynx, pharynx, esophagus, trachea, thyroid and parathyroid glands, neurovascular structures, and skin.
Table 0CY, Transplantation of Mouth and Throat, was added to the classification to create codes for allogeneic and syngeneic larynx transplantation. Syngeneic refers to a transplant from a donor who is genetically identical to the recipient. Allogeneic refers to a transplant from a genetically similar, but not identical, donor.
