2025 Health IT Readiness & Implementation Impact

e4health recently conducted a CHIME CIO survey to understand how health systems are navigating EMR and revenue cycle implementations. CIOs shared what is working, where challenges persist, and how they plan to move forward.

1. Workflow comes first
Clinician workflows were the clearest improvements after go-lives.
2. Data integrity in doubt
Despite being a top C-suite priority, confidence in data integrity is low and governance is inconsistent.
3. Automation is emerging
Few use AI for fax or document workflows today, but most have plans to adopt it.

Why This Matters

The CHIME survey highlights both progress and persistent gaps in Health IT modernization. Workflow improvements show meaningful value for clinicians, but the data tells a different story when it comes to information quality and governance. While most executives say data integrity is a top C-suite priority, many organizations lack a formal governance committee and fewer than half rate their programs as effective. Confidence in the accuracy of patient records is more often “mixed” than “high,” suggesting that governance structures aren’t keeping pace with leadership expectations. Measuring ROI on data migrations and archive platforms is also rare, making it difficult to prove value or build the case for continued investment. At the same time, automation remains underutilized: most are not using AI today, but the majority have it on their near-term roadmap. These findings underscore the need for stronger governance, better measurement, and pragmatic automation pilots to close the gap between vision and reality.
